The Sacred Deposit Of Faith began that evening when God walked in the Garden of Eden, after Adam and Eve had eaten the forbidden fruit. The first Great Revelation was that God would send them a Savior, a Redeemer, Who would open the Gates of Heaven.
If the Children of Adam and Eve had walked into a Catholic Church before Vatican II, they would have recognized that very same Deposit of Faith in its fulfillment. Cain and Abel would have seen an Altar of Sacrifice upon which a Majestic Oblation was offered, and they would have recognized the very selfsame Law to which they were bounden. In a very real sense, the Eternal Sacrifice began even before the world was created. It is outside of all time and space, occurring within the Bounds of the Very Godhead Himself. (Which is why the Devils, which enjoy only a preternatural, and not supernatural, existence, cannot understand Calvary, Our Lady, or Our Lord Jesus Christ. They see only the effects as shadows cast across the floor, or rays streaming from the clouds of Heaven, but they cannot perceive beyond the veil. And that is why they have no idea what the ultimate outcome of their conflict with the Godhead will be. They see God as weak, as not executing justice, and they are baffled...)
Throughout the course of the Old Testament the Deposit of Faith was added to. Abraham was told that the Redeemer would come from his stock. King David was told the Messiah would come from his House. Isaiah prophesied the Redeemer would be a Great King and Wonderful Counselor, yet would also be scourged for our sins and bruised for our iniquities. Malachi spoke of a wonderful sacrifice that would be from the Rising of the Sun to its Setting.
And then in the fullness of time the Angel of Gabriel announced to Our Lady that she would be the Mother of God, and Simeon foretold that a Sword would pierce her heart, that the thoughts of many men would be revealed, and that her child would ever be a Sign of Contradiction. And Our Lord Jesus Christ Himself said that when the Son of Man is lifted up, He will draw all things to Himself.
Nobody can look at Our Lord Jesus Christ and be indifferent. They will either revile and curse Him as the Perfidious Jews did, or they will kneel in Adoration, and Sorrow.
Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the Night He was betrayed, bequeathed to the World Holy Mother Church. He ordained the Apostles and Peter and John were the Acolytes of the first Mass He said as Eternal High Priest. (Yes, Those Parts of Mary of Agreda and Anne Catherine Emmerich this Wolf regards as being supremely accurate. That was also the conclusion the venerable Rev Father James Luke Meagher, in his erudite tome "How Christ said the First Mass", drew.)
And despite the fact those selfsame Apostles scattered and fled after one of their number had betrayed him for a paltry thirty pieces of SIlver, Our Lady persevered in her Cenacle until Pentecost when the Holy Ghost Descended with His Gifts and Sanctifying Grace won by Our Lord and Our Lady on and at the Foot of the Holy Cross.
And with the Death of St John, all Revelation, in the strictest sense, ceased. But many of the revelations of both the Old and New Testaments, especially those concerning Our Lady, were still in germ form buried under seeds yet to be sown. Did any of the Apostles equate her with the Woman in the Canticle of Canticles who "Cometh Forth as the Morning Rising, Fair as the Moon, Bright as the Sun, terrible as an army set in Battle Array"?
Meanwhile, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, just as the Law given to Moses on stone tablets, was ossified for all time. The Rites of the Apostles could not be changed, only decorated with new ceremonies, which themselves would become venerable and unchangeable with the passage of time and soon become Immemorial Custom.
And finally, in the fullness of time, Pope Pius V would use the full majesty of his office, under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost, to codify this Mass as to its calendar of fasts and feasts, movable and immovable, its rubrics, and its time of day, in the face of new tempests against the foundations of Holy Mother Church, unleashed when Martin Luther and his ilk opened the Pit of Hell.
Holy Mother Church lives in Eternity, not in Time. It does not need to adapt to the "Spirit" of each century, let alone each decade. As Salvation History unfolds and the Prophecies foretelling the Second Coming of Our Lord Jesus Christ and the Great Day of Almighty God rush to fulfillment because of sins, Holy Mother Church needs only to remain within the Cenacle with Our Lady, awaiting with expectation and hope.
Some have said the Church is in Eclipse. Some have said the Popes from Paul to Frantic have made Holy Mother Church unrecognizable. They are wrong. Holy Mother Church will always be visible. And today her sons can be recognized reciting the Most Holy Rosary as they await with joyful hope the Triumph of the Immaculate Heart.
It is always darkest on a moonless night just before the dawn.
Beautifully said, especially by a crusty old wolf!
