As the dust starts to settle on Pride Month, 2023, the incoming verdict is not since Jerry Falwell's Moral Majority have the forces of liberation suffered such a series of stinging blows, starting with the unofficial boycott of Bud Light and ending with the beyond embarrassing (for the "woke" mob) performance of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence in Dodger Stadium, symbolized by the drubbing the team took over the weekend at the hands of the San Francisco Giants.
As a battery of enraged Catholics protested in the stadium parking lot, a sparsely populated Dodger Stadium witnessed the Sisters, to a rain of boos and catcalls, take their award in a hurried ceremony and then unceremoniously herded back out of sight. By the time the first pitch was thrown they were long gone.
Just as the feminists overextended themselves and lost touch with mainstream America when it championed the cause of abortion on demand, so the anti-discrimination lobby has lost touch with mainline culture by openly siding with pederasty and the "transgender" mob. Joe Sixpack may not care what two fags do in the privacy of their bedroom or at a gay bar, but he is not ready, by a long shot, to be a card-carrying member of what David Knight refers to as "Sodom Go Marxist".
And so, while we are a long way from turning the tide on the culture wars and restoring even a facade of Christian culture, we can bask in what definitely appears to be, if only temporarily, a high water mark. Hopefully, as the leaves drop this Autumn, at least a few public school systems will have to roll back, if only somewhat, their rabid promotion of the "trans" culture, with its attendant pronouns, nomenclature, and apparel.
Now, of course, the bad news is that this probably only temporary. As was the case with the legalization of abortion in 1973 and the "legalization" of "homosexual marriage" some years back, at first, mainline America is flabbergasted and enraged, but then gets used to the proverbial "wolf at the door". More than likely, this is just another spasmodic paroxysm of the corpse that was the United States of America.
At this juncture, allow me to spotlight the culprits that have allowed the current moral cesspool to become a flood tide, threatening to deluge the typical American family whenever they leave the sanctuary of their own homes and engage in any commerce whatsoever.
First up are the bishops, who are supposed to be the successors of the Holy Apostles. When abortion was legalized by the United States supreme court in 1973 nary a protest sounded from those quarters. Back then, the bishops, collectively, still had a considerable amount of respect and clout, even in Protestant circles. They could have, for example, called upon their respective flocks to stop paying taxes and supporting government at every level, and led blockades of clinics in their jurisdictions. They could have called for boycotts of any business that transacted in any way whatsoever with a clinic, right down to their supplier of toilet paper. Instead, we got from the bishops was namby pamby lip service to the moral code while calling for help for the "victims" of abortion- not the infants being dismembered in the womb, but the "poor pregnant mothers"- what are they supposed to do? It is not as though the vast majority of these women had a gun at their head and were forced to perform marital relations, although to listen to the bishops, collectively, one would have had to assume this was the case.
Next up are the politicians. American politicians, especially, excel at being committed to action in the ephemeral sphere while absolutely allergic to any practical activity where the proverbial rubber meets the road. Moreover, they always had handy that "I am personally opposed but..." line while consistently failing to produce all those hordes of women screaming for abortion on demand. They are also experts at equivocation, insisting that nuclear weapons, poverty, and discrimination are just as important issues as abortion (although, to my knowledge, no infant ever got dismembered by missiles, hunger, or at the back of the bus). Back in the '70's, it is astounding that all the political hot air over the abortion issue was never cited as a major component of Global Warming.
And then we have the media, both the news media and the movies, which, during the course of the last sixty years or so, have fed the public an increasing diet of the voyeuristic, the sensational, and the perverted. To say the news media distorted the politics of the "Pro-Life" movement is an understatement. They would spectacularly ignore or under report massive rallies and campaigns, while trumping up sparsely populated gatherings of so-called "Pro-Choice" activists. For years the news media acted as though both camps were running neck and neck, when nothing could have been further from the truth, as those in favor of abortion were big government public relations agencies, the leadership in some of the philanthropic societies, the doctors and staff at the abortion clinics, and little else. Meanwhile, in theatres, parenting was out, divorce, adultery, and perversion were in, and the playboy lifestyle was often portrayed as the road to happiness and popularity, if not fame. As for the music industry- all one had to do was glance at the album covers.
Last, but far from least, are the parents. The Post-World-War-Two generation did a great job of abdicating their responsibility to schools, both private and public, and to the medical racket. And the liberal agenda, which started its long march through the institutions at the primary grade school level, was only too happy to oblige. Few parents blanched when classroom "sex ed" was introduced, as the school made a wonderful babysitter for ma, so she could go to the mall, have lunch with her friends, and, all too often, have a career so the family could "keep up with the Jones'". Of course, these parents were duly rewarded, when their children, rather than caring for them in their old age, had them carted to the "nursing home" and a life of loneliness and bitter remorse, which they tried to drown in an ocean of soap operas and game shows.
Have we finally hit bottom? Are people starting to realize that a life of materialistic narcissism does not bring happiness but only a yawning emptiness at the bottom of the heart? Are people starting to realize that the most valuable things are not lurking on a shelf at Walmart or in designer magazines? High time, because the wreckage of over half a century of perpetual indulgence is at last threatening to engulf the entire commonweal, and fragment it into a chaos of warring factions. For years on end, I have been saying that the final act of Liberal America will be the shootouts in the streets of the major cities between the cops and the gangs over the last box of mini-donuts in the corner convenience store, after all the grocery shelves are emptied by the looters.
And, as always, Our Lady of Fatima has the solution, for the individual, the family, and society at large. It begins on our knees reciting the Most Holy Rosary while wearing Our Lady's Scapular of Mount Carmel, and ends by taking our place in the army of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Eternal High Priest and King of Kings.
